When should I move my baby into their own room?

Many parents wonder when — or if — their baby should move into their own room. This article looks at the recommended age for room transitions, how baby sleep can change after the move, and how to make the transition feel calm and secure for both parents and baby. There’s no single “right time”, only what’s right for your child.

Moving your baby into their own room can often lead to better sleep for everyone!

It’s absolutely possible to teach your baby to sleep well while room-sharing—or even bed-sharing. But many parents find that transitioning to a separate bedroom brings positive changes to sleep. If you want your baby to sleep well at night, and you have a room for them, this move can be a wise step.

Guidance from The Lullaby Trust recommends that babies sleep in a cot or crib in the same room as a parent until at least six months old. Some families choose to wait longer, and that’s completely fine—there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline.

A time for changes

Often, moving your baby to their own room coincides with upgrading to a larger cot. If you’d like to make the transition more gradual, consider moving their current cot to the foot of your bed for a few nights. This can act as a gentle ‘stepping stone’ and help your baby adjust to sleeping slightly further away.

It’s often helpful to wait until night feeds have been dropped before moving your baby to a different room. If you’re not quite ready to make the full move, just changing the position of their cot within your room can also signal change and help them begin to adapt to sleeping at night without feeds.

That said, this in-room transition isn’t essential. If space is tight, or you feel confident your baby is ready, it’s fine to move them into their own room and drop night feeds or other nighttime routines at the same time. A new environment can be a helpful re-set in itself.

A step by step guide to moving your baby into their own room

  • Get them familiar with their new room in advance if possible. Do nappy changes in there etc. You can start them off with having naps in their new room before bedtime sleep if you like, but this isn’t essential.
  • When the room is ready before they move in, go into the room in the evening, during the night and early in the morning to check that light, sound and temperature levels are all okay.
  • If their room shares a party wall with a neighbour, politely let them know that the baby is moving in. This way they will not be alarmed if they hear them cry. They will [hopefully] be considerate about keeping their own noise levels down too.
  • If noise is going to be an issue, think about installing some white or pink noise.
  • Some people like to move their baby’s smaller crib into the new room before transitioning to a full-size cot. I don’t think it makes any difference and it makes better sense to associate the new cot with the new room from night one.
  • Use all the familiar elements of your usual bedtime routine, including portable sleep cues like songs, phrases, the same bedtime book etc. This way, even though your baby is in a different cot and a different room, everything will feel safe and familiar.
  • Follow your bedtime routine! Then put them into their cot in the way that they are used to. This is unless you are also starting a new settling technique.
  • Introducing a new room, new cot and new routine all at the same time, is a good thing!

Some reassurance

You can expect your baby to possibly be a bit unsettled when they move to their own room, but you may be surprised by how well they take to it. Babies often sleep better when they’re not being disturbed by you and your partner rolling over, groaning and snoring!

If you’re struggling to make your mind up, research has shown that babies do tend to sleep better when they are in a room of their own.

The holiday effect!

Has your baby ever surprised you by sleeping better than usual while on holiday?

It’s more common than you might think—and there’s a simple reason why!

A new sleep environment often means the usual sleep associations are changed. Without the familiar cues that typically lead to frequent night wakings, your baby may not know what to expect. As a result, they often let go of learned habits and just… sleep!
